“Rachel has been so much more than a trainer to me. I began training with Rachel in October of 2010, during a time in my life when I had made some large changes, and was left feeling a little torn down and confused…
Rachel saw something in me that I did not yet see myself; she saw my eagerness to improve and to learn, and she helped bring out the best in me. She motivated and encouraged me to reach for my dreams, and never back down. Most importantly, Rachel helped me overcome all of the challenges that life had thrown at me.
In December 2010, she presented to me with idea of competing at the Emerald Cup in April. I knew that it would be a challenge, but I knew that I could conquer that challenge with Rachel by my side. Training for Emerald Cup was a remarkable and life-changing experience for me. There were countless times when I wanted to throw in the towel and give up, but Rachel believed in me, so she gave me strength when I was weak and helped instill faith when all I had was doubt. It was also during this time, that Rachel introduced me to the world of fitness modeling. Within six months of training with her, she had completely transformed my body, my relationship with food, and had introduced me to body building shows and modeling (two fields that I am still very interested in and purusing).
What I loved about training with Rachel, and what made me continue to do Virtual Training after I had moved from Seattle to Las Vegas, was that she was so invested in each and every one of her clients. She brings out the best in people, and helps people through all of their life journeys. Furthermore, she shares her knowledge and reasoning behind everything she does; she explains the science behind both the nutrition and the training aspects of fitness. And she will go into as much detail as you desire (sometimes much more than you can wrap your head around!).
Even during the hiatus I took from training this past year, Rachel still checked in on me, and made sure that I was doing alright. After taking about a six month break from training, I started back with Rachel via her Virtual Training program. Her Virtual Training program still offered me all of the accountability that I needed. She was always a text or e-mail away, and would tweak my program or give me pointers after every weight check-in or progress picture update. She helped me make leaps and bounds of progress in what seemed like the blink of an eye. So of course, when I moved back home to Seattle this past May, I knew that I would need to get back to training in person with her for the little period of her time in Seattle that remained!
During the month and a half of training that I had in Seattle with her, she helped me completely transform my body. I made progress every single week in terms of putting on muscle and dropping body fat, and I owe it all to the guidance of Rachel.
So, as I said earlier, Rachel has been much more than a trainer to me in the past year and a half that I have known her. She has been a trainer, a mentor, a friend, and an “older sister”. She has helped me grow so much as both an athlete and a person. I cannot emphasize enough what an amazing experience training with her has been. “At the beginning of this year, I was unmotivated, yet trying to lose weight. I was very unhappy with my weight and the way I looked. I knew I wanted to change, but I felt hopeless in trying to figure out how. In January I entered a contest to win a free personal trainer. I was a little anxious when I won, but was hoping this would be the answer to finally lose the weight I had been trying to for years!
It turned out to be one of the greatest things that has happen to me. Rachel Murray has been the biggest motivator to me in my weight loss journey. She started out by showing me changes I need to make and gradually kept adding things. She had me blog every week about my progress and success. Where can I even begin??? I can still remember coming into 24 hour fitness with my big goal of loosing 10 pounds for my upcoming Mexico and Hawaii vacations..Oh, and lets not forget my upcoming wedding that May!! I had no idea what a lifestyle change I was in for! You were instantly inspiring, and so encouraging from day 1. You helped me stop and take a look at my habits and how they were effecting not only how I looked, but also how I felt…you helped me see that the changes that were going to take place would not happen overnight.. but that it was a process and you would be there to help me through it! And man what a change you made in me! Not only did I look remarkably better for the beach vacations.. “On October 6th I met with Rachel with a clear goal; to loose body fat. Rachel measured me and we determined that I was 10% body fat. I made the decision that I wanted to get down to 5–6 percent by the end of our time together and that is where this story really begins. Every Tuesday and Thursday for 6 weeks I ventured into the studio for what I liked to call “the beat out.” It was called this because I told Rachel to beat it out every session and when I start to give out or up say whatever she wanted to make me mad and pump me up…..and she did! As Rachel got the pleasure of “beating it out” I got the pleasure of watching my body transform and start to take shape of something remarkable. Muscles that were hiding behind others came around the corner and started to become erect and fat that kept me warm started to fall off. “Working with Rachel has been awesome. Although I was able to lose quite a bit of weight that I gained while I was abroad through grueling cardio workouts, I never knew very much about weight lifting (I was under the misconception that weightlifting = bulking up). I will admit that it was tough to change my eating habits and it was hard work to plan 5 (healthy) meals a day! However, I firmly believe that working with Rachel was the kickstart I needed to make these important lifestyle changes. “Rachel and I trained for three years until she relocated to Los Angeles. I cannot recommend her highly enough and would give her a five star plus rating!
At age 68, I’m probably one of her oldest clients and one with whom she had major challenges. I have severe arthritis in both knees and a persistent shoulder injury. Additionally, as a result of increasing immobility and my own “food issues” I was not the usual work and loose the weight client.
No matter what the complaint (or mood), Rachel was always positive and creative. During my time with her, I was able to get stronger than I ever imagined possible, find new inspiration on the rowing machine (those intervals were killers) and keep going when I really wanted to chuck it all.
Not only is Rachel a skilled, creative and caring trainer, she’s a wonderful motivator. It’s the “give me 5 more” “you can do it—grrrrrr” routine that gives me the strength and confidence to work harder. She had so many little “tricks” to work around my bad knees, that I often told her to make a demo of working around chronic injuries.
I don’t think it’s entirely possible to put into words the wonderful training bond and friendship, all within professional boundaries, which we shared. I saw her more than my own children, and she more than her own Mom. So I feel particularly grateful for all her efforts to improve my fitness and health. She put up with endless brag photos of my grandkids, and I watched her develop, articulate, and work so hard to realize her life fitness dreams. I wish her only the best.
